South West based, UKNetWeb has just completed work on a DVD archive series for nationally acclaimed motor racing magazine, Motorsport.

The series of four disks archive and display all 480 complete magazines published between 1950 and 1989, covering nearly 40 years of motor racing history.

Working with London based design agency, Point 6, UKNetWeb, were appointed to carry out the technical development of the DVDs which use Flash based programming to display each magazine as they would have originally appeared.

The development of the disks was no mean task with each disk compiling and indexing over 13,000 separate images, as well as all the magazine text for use in custom searches. Ensuring that the disks operated at a good speed when working with such high numbers of images and text required intensive planning and specification to ensure reliability and ease of use.

Commenting on the development, UKNetWeb Managing Director, Toby Parkins, said:

“It was a great project to be involved with. Knowing the prestige and history of the Motorsport title we realised that this really had to be something special. Working with the design team at Point 6, the finished product brings the historic archive to both those who read it the first time round, and those reading it for the very first time.”

“Through a range of navigation options and advanced search features we have made the disks accessible in a way the original writers could never have imagined.”

For anyone interested in ordering their own copy, the DVDs series is available to purchase at around £40.00 a disk from the magazine’s website, www.motorsportmagazine.co.uk.

I just wanted to submit a quick post acknowledging Orange’s outstanding new ‘Unlimited’ site. For those of you who are yet to visit it check it out here.

The general concept is a never ending flash based site featuring hundreds (maybe thousands) of little gadgety things to share, embed or whatever you please. With easy ‘share’ tags on most animations featured, they offer easy forwarding to blog pages, del.icio.us accounts and much more.

This feature rich site fully embraces the web 2.0 principles offering engaging and interactive content that weaves effortlessly into the social bookmarking and online sharing communities.

Well done Orange – I look forward to wasting hours lost talking to little robots, cutting the hair of weird birds or inventing my own brands of ice-cream.
